Rackstraw ends 2021 F1600 season in style

2021 Formula 1600 National Champion Andrew Rackstraw, was ready to end the season on a high.

Entering the F1600 battle arena for the final time in 2021 at Zwartkops Raceway, Rackstraw enforced his status as class Champion with yet another flawless performance out on track.

Free Practice belonged to Rackstraw, topping both sessions. Pretoria’s Zwartkops Raceway is firmly an away fixture for the talented young Capetonian, but Rackstraw looked right at home as he dished out consecutive perfect laps.

The now 20 year old has matured rapidly throughout the 2021 season and is a threat every time he steps into a race car or kart.

Adequately supported by the Racedriver SA Team, it doesn’t take much to notice Rackstraw’s gold and red helmet poking out the cockpit of his RDSA liveried single seater as he dishes out top performances. It’s a pleasure to observe the smooth manner in which he takes a car to its limits of grip and performance.

Saturday morning saw qualifying get underway with a different kind of buzz in the air. Spectators were back and ready to cheer the drivers on.

Rackstraw didn’t disappoint as he marched onto securing two front row starts for the upcoming races. Race 1 from P2 and pole position for Race 2. This meant that Rackstraw has started 12 times from the front row this season, in 12 races. An impressive achievement.

The weekend then belonged to the 2021 Champion. After a launch most drag racers would envy, Rackstraw wasted no time in finding his flow. Lap after lap, he edged out the gap to his rivals to take an impressive victory.

Picking up from where he left off in Race 1, Rackstraw executed his race start to perfection in the final race of the day to lead from lights out to the finish line. He was kept honest by those in chase, but the maturity and calmness that Rackstraw has exemplified all season long, was yet again on display. He secured the final win on offer for the year, ending off a magical season.

“What an unbelievable end to an amazing year. The team has worked so hard all year long, and everything has paid off. This weekend we were a bit on the back foot with setup but used our experience to extract the most getting 2 wins.“

“A massive thanks has to go to all my sponsors Investchem, Sparco, Crossley & Webb, The Sim Grid, and RDSA for the continuous support. F1600 has really been a journey that I will never forget.”

“I know I say it a lot but words can’t describe how appreciative I am to my mom and dad for all they have done for me. I also want to personally thank Hendrick who has put so much hard work into my car over the last 3 years. Winning a championship with him and Investchem has been very special!”

Emotions were high when the final checkered flag waved, bringing and end to 2021 National Formula 1600 Championship. Emphasised by the possibility that this chapter in Rackstraw’s career may soon be over. One can only wonder with excitement what lays ahead for this young man. One thing is for certain, whatever he decides to strap into next, rest assured he will be fast.

Rackstraw has been an integral part of the Ford family for the last 3 years. His partnership with his Investchem team and engineer Hendrick has been the stuff of legend. Special mention to Hendrick, who in his own right, secured his 7th title in the class alongside Rackstraw this season. The RDSA camp is also extremely proud as Rackstraw became their 2nd driver to win the championship in the last few years.

Final thoughts from Andrew’s mentor and team boss of RacedriverSA, Claudio Piazza-Musso:

“Andrew’s hard work and commitment has earned him a great championship this year by using his speed, experience and consistency to pressure and beat his talented opposition. Furthermore, sharing his data and experience with many of his opponents, he truly outclassed them even at their home tracks. Andrew is now ready to take on the world as he is experienced and mature enough to do so. The most celebrated driver I have ever had the privilege to work with and truly enjoyed an epic championship.”

The future really does look incredibly bright for Rackstraw.
